Al-Bāṭin and al-Ẓāhir: The Hidden and the Visible The Quran names God as both the Hidden and the Visible. Someone finally let in on something kept quiet for a long time tends to ask why it waited. Hiddenness here works like storage, so the long silence took nothing away from what was being held. The whole of it stayed intact the entire time, waiting to be handed over.

I was a hidden treasure and I loved to be known, so I made the world: being known is the reason anything exists Sufis repeat this line constantly as words spoken by God. It gives the long secrecy a motive, the wish to be known by someone. Under that reading, the making of everything and the telling of the secret belong to a single movement. Nothing was ever going to stay locked away, since the whole point of it was to be known.

Al-Insān al-Kāmil: The complete human Ibn Arabi's name for the person in whom God's self-showing comes together whole. He taught that the rest of creation came about through that one, so making the world and unveiling it belong to the same act. Anyone can hear such a claim as praise piled on a single figure. The weight sits elsewhere: one life becomes the place where the hidden thing can be looked at directly.

Tajallī: Self-disclosure Ibn Arabi's word for God stepping into view. The showing never arrives all at once; each person receives as much as they can hold, and the rest stays covered for now. That explains how one message, told openly to everyone, lands differently on each person who hears it. Sight comes in portions, and a person takes in more of it later.

Amāna: The trust The Quran tells of a trust that the heavens, the earth and the mountains declined, and a human being took up. Carrying something valuable that belongs to someone else changes how a person holds it: the job is delivery, not ownership. A message this large can leave someone feeling both crushed and steadied. Getting it to people in one piece is the whole of the assignment.

Live Ephesians 3:9 today

  1. Something you understand now that you did not a year ago was already true back then, you just could not see it yet. Spend a quiet minute today letting that soften your impatience with what you still cannot see.
  2. Tell one person something real about your life that you have been keeping to yourself, not because it is dramatic but because being known is the point. A text, a walk, a phone call on the drive home.
  3. When you have to explain something in a meeting or a group chat and people clearly are not getting it, give them the part they can hold today instead of the whole thing at once. Patience here is not watering it down, it is good delivery.

What have you been holding quietly that was always meant to be handed over?

Tao Te Ching 1

The way that can be named is not the whole of the way, yet the naming is how we come to it. What is unseen gives rise to everything seen, and the seen is how the unseen becomes available to us.

Upanishads · Svetasvatara

The self is hidden the way fire is hidden in its wood, waiting to be drawn out rather than made. What is revealed was never absent, only unseen.

Zen · Dogen

Enlightenment is compared to the moon reflected in water: the whole moon lands in a single dewdrop, and in a wide lake, each according to what it can hold. One light, received in the size of the vessel.
