Ephesians 5:11 Meaning Have No Fellowship with the Unfruitful Deeds

Have no fellowship with the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even reprove them.

What does Ephesians 5:11 mean?

Ghaflah: Heedlessness Ghaflah names living in forgetfulness of God while life keeps moving. Deeds done inside that fog can look busy and even exciting, but they leave nothing behind, like a meal that never fills you.

Ghaflah: Heedlessness Ghaflah names living in forgetfulness of God while life keeps moving. Deeds done inside that fog can look busy and even exciting, but they leave nothing behind, like a meal that never fills you. Seeing that emptiness plainly takes most of the appeal out of them, long before anyone argues against them.

Ṣuḥba: Keeping company Ṣuḥba is the shaping power of the people you sit with. Nobody stays neutral in company; standards drift by small degrees, and the tenth time something happens it barely registers. Staying close to what you disapprove of usually ends with you no longer disapproving of it.

Waraʿ: Careful holding back Waraʿ means keeping clear of what is murky, not only of what is obviously wrong. A person can avoid doing the thing and still lend it their presence, their laughter, their silence. Pulling those back costs something with friends, which is why it feels harder than refusing outright.

Whoever sees a wrong should change it by hand, then by word, then in the heart: some step is always open A saying of the Prophet lays out a ladder. Most people think the choice is to fix the whole thing or shrug, so they shrug. The smallest rung, refusing it inwardly, is what keeps a person from sliding into quiet agreement over the years.

Naṣīḥa: Sincere counsel Naṣīḥa means speaking because you want someone well, and the Prophet called all of religion by this word. Correction can come from care or from the pleasure of being right, and the words often sound identical. The difference shows up in whether you would say it privately, and whether you would be glad to turn out wrong.

Live Ephesians 5:11 today

  1. Think of the thing you no longer mind that you once did, a show, a habit, a way of talking about people. Name it honestly to yourself and decide whether you still agree with it.
  2. The next time the joke at someone's expense goes around the table, do not laugh. You do not have to lecture anyone, just let that one land in silence.
  3. When a work chat turns into something you would not want quoted, say one plain thing and then go quiet. Mute the thread if you need to.

What have you been lending your laughter to that you would not defend out loud?

Dhammapada 78

Keep company with the good and avoid the company of the low. You will end up resembling the room you spend your evenings in.

Pirkei Avot 1:7

Stay away from a bad neighbor and do not attach yourself to the one doing wrong. The warning is not about their guilt, it is about the drift.

He said he always came back from a crowd a little worse than he went in. Being there is never neutral, even when you did nothing.
