Orthodox

Wisdom means attention held before God, not cleverness. Lives go wrong mostly by drift, small unwatched choices piling up until a direction is set before anyone has chosen it.

Watchfulness catches a thought before it becomes a mood and the mood before it becomes a word, while the habit is still light enough to move. That watching runs on prayer. A short, frequent turning to Christ through the day keeps the eye clear, since no one stays awake by willpower for long. For the hours already lost there is repentance, and grace restores the ground that drift took.

Live Ephesians 5:15 today

  1. Set one quiet marker in your day, the kettle boiling, the elevator, the red light, and use it to come back to yourself with a few words aimed at God. Short and often beats long and rare.
  2. Catch the mood early with the person you live with. When you feel the first edge in your voice, say it plainly, I am getting short, give me a minute, before it becomes an evening.
  3. When you reach for your phone without deciding to, put it down once and ask what you were actually looking for. Most drift is made of a hundred unwatched small reaches like that one.

Where is my life heading that I never actually chose?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · mindfulness of mind

The teaching is to catch a state while it is still small: the irritation before it is anger, the craving before it is action. Early is the only time it moves easily.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Marcus wrote to himself each morning because he knew he would drift by evening. Short, frequent returns to attention, not one heroic decision, were how he kept his life pointed somewhere.

Tao Te Ching 64

What is huge now was tiny once, and the time to deal with it was then. Handle a thing while it is still easy and you will never have to handle it while it is hard.
