SUFISM
Shukr: Thankfulness Al-Ghazali's point is that thanks starts with seeing who gave. Good things mostly arrive quietly and get filed away as normal, so a person can be surrounded by them and still feel owed something. Putting a giver behind each ordinary thing breaks that habit, and an average day stops feeling flat and earned.
Everything turns out well for the believer, thankful in ease and patient in loss: no stretch of a life falls outside the good The Prophet said this about anyone who trusts God. Thanking for everything sounds simple until it has to include the months nobody would have chosen. The saying does not call loss pleasant. It says an easy season and a hard one can both be taken as something handed to you, which keeps gratitude from covering only half a life.
If you are thankful, I will give you more: thanks opens the hand that gives Sufis repeat this line from the Quran constantly. The increase people expect is more possessions, though the first thing that usually grows is the ability to feel what is already there. Someone who complains all day can be given a good day and not register it, while a thankful person gets more out of the very same hours.
How can I thank you when my thanks is itself your gift: gratitude leans on what was given Sufis retell a moment when David put this question to God and was told that the asking was already thanks. Anyone trying to be grateful for everything runs into a wall, because the effort feels far too small for the size of what has been received. That worry loses its grip once the wish to thank is seen as arriving from the same source as everything else.
Ḥamd: Praise Praise aims at the one giving rather than at the gift. Thanks can easily stop halfway, the way a person can love a present and barely think about who sent it, and then the gladness stays tied to whatever happens to be going well. Praise travels the rest of the distance, so a person ends up glad about the giver, with the gifts as how they got there.
Sufism lens
What have you been treating as normal that was handed to you?
Do not ask for things to happen as you want, but want them as they happen, and you will be at peace. Thanks is possible in a season you would not have chosen.
The practice is a hundred blessings a day, said over bread, over water, over light. Spread that thin and nothing ordinary stays unnoticed.
Gratitude is named as a mark of a good person, something cultivated rather than felt by luck. It grows with use, like anything else you practice.
