Ephesians 5:22 Meaning Wives

Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.

What does Ephesians 5:22 mean?

The wife is the receptive, feeling side of a person and the husband the reasoning, governing side, the 2 powers married within one being. For the feeling nature to yield to its own reasoning nature is the inner ordering by which the emotions take their direction from the higher judgment rather than running loose.

The wife is the receptive, feeling side of a person and the husband the reasoning, governing side, the 2 powers married within one being. For the feeling nature to yield to its own reasoning nature is the inner ordering by which the emotions take their direction from the higher judgment rather than running loose.

To submit as unto the Lord raises this arrangement above mere household rule: the receptive part of a man aligns itself with the governing part as that part aligns with the divine within. The whole is a picture of one consciousness set in order, the feeling waters settling under the guidance of the mind that answers to its own indwelling Lord.

Live Ephesians 5:22 today

  1. When a strong feeling rises today, anger, envy, dread, sit with it for sixty seconds before you do anything. Let your judgment, not the surge, decide the next move.
  2. In a disagreement today, say the true thing you are feeling out loud, then let your calmer self choose the words that follow. Feeling gets a voice, not the wheel.
  3. Before you send the heated reply, write it, then leave it in drafts for an hour. If it still reads right when you are cool, send it. Most of the time it will not.

When did a feeling last drive, and where did it take me?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

When feeling floods in, let the reasoning part hold the reins. Emotion is a good horse and a terrible driver.

Hinduism · Katha Upanishad

The senses are the horses, the mind the reins, and understanding the one who drives. Harnessed that way, the chariot arrives.

Taoism · Tao Te Ching

Muddy water left alone settles and turns clear. Still the churning feeling and what to do shows itself.
