Ephesians 5:25 Meaning Husbands

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly, and gave himself up for it;

What does Ephesians 5:25 mean?

The measure set for a husband is not affection but self-offering. A man is asked to spend himself, his time, his preferences, his pride, for the good of one other person, and to keep spending when nothing comes back. That is the same love that went to the Cross, poured out before the beloved was beautiful, in order to make her so.

This turns headship inside out. Authority in a home is real, and it looks like a man dying a little every day so that his wife may grow toward God. Marriage becomes a small workshop where husband and wife are slowly shaped into people capable of heaven, and the shaping happens through ordinary, costly patience.

Live Ephesians 5:25 today

  1. Do one thing for your wife or the person closest to you today that she will never know about: the task she dreads, the thing she keeps forgetting, done quietly and not mentioned.
  2. The next time you are right and she is tired, let go of being right. Give up the win, ask what she needs, and mean it.
  3. When nothing comes back, no thanks, no warmth, no credit, keep spending anyway for one more day. Love that only runs on returns was never the kind that was asked of you.

What did I give up for her this week that actually cost me something?

Water takes the low place and serves whatever it touches, and that is why nothing outlasts it. Strength that bends downward is the kind that holds.

Buddhism · the Bodhisattva vow

The vow is to put the other's liberation first and keep going without a finish line or a thank you. Love is defined as sustained self-spending, not as feeling.

Sufism · Rumi

Rumi describes love as a fire that burns away everything in you that was not love. The lover expects to be consumed, and considers it a good trade.
