Ephesians 5:8 Meaning For You Were Once Darkness

Once you were darkness. Not merely in darkness, but darkness itself, so completely identified with the thinking mind that no light of awareness could shine through. This is how most human beings live, and it is the root of the suffering we create for ourselves and others.

But awareness has awakened in you now, and you are that light. To walk as a child of light is not to believe new thoughts or follow new rules. It is to bring the light of consciousness into each thing you do, staying present, so that your actions arise from stillness rather than from the old darkness of unconscious reaction.

Darkness and light are 2 conditions of the same person, not 2 kinds of people. To have been darkness is to have lived wholly in the pull of the body and the senses, unaware of the higher current running through the nervous system. To become light is for that current to wake and shine out through the flesh it always inhabited. The change is inward: the same eyes now let something through them that they blocked before. Walking as children of light means the awakened awareness governs the daily motions of the body, so that ordinary living carries the shine that was hidden in it all along.

Darkness was never something you had; it was something you were taken to be, a bundle of borrowed opinions calling itself a person. When awareness returns, that person does not get improved, it simply is not found, and what remains casts no shadow.

Walking as light means the change shows in ordinary movement, in how a man eats, works, speaks to someone who cannot help him. Otherwise it stays a belief collected from another's experience, and borrowed light gives no warmth. Live it and there is no need to announce it; people will feel it before anything is said.

Most people try to walk their way into an identity that was handed to them before the first step.

A person will collect evidence for years before permitting themselves a new name, and the collecting keeps the old name in power. What someone believes about their category sets the emotion they bring to ordinary choices, and that emotion decides whether a choice is made from lack or from belonging.

Darkness was never a list of deeds; it was the category a person lived inside, and light in the Lord replaces the category. Walking that way is consistency showing on the outside, not the fee for admission. Whoever keeps auditioning for what they have already been called burns the energy the walking asks for.
