Ephesians 6:21 Meaning But That You Also May Know

But that you also may know my affairs, how I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will make known to you all things.

What does Ephesians 6:21 mean?

A name in Scripture is never a literal name; it is the way, a state pointing past the man who wears it. The letter comes from one who calls his readers his beloveds, and underneath the whole epistle runs his own admission, that he cannot master his carnal nature and addresses his affection only to the men, his boys, his brothers.

What is really made known is not travel news but a mind reporting its own condition to the minds beneath it, thoughts passing word of how the ruling self fares.

The lord in whom the messenger is faithful is the higher mind, and every true messenger is a photon, an angel of light carrying word inward. Between the mind that is the father and the deeds that follow, this report of how one does is the state of the man passed down the chain of his own thinking.

Live Ephesians 6:21 today

  1. Once today, ask yourself how you are actually doing and answer in one honest sentence, the way you would to a close friend and not to a coworker. No fixing it, just naming it.
  2. When someone asks how you are, give them one true detail instead of fine. Small and real beats a smooth report.
  3. Under pressure, say the state out loud to yourself before you act. I am rattled. I am tired and about to be short with someone. Naming it quietly takes most of its power away.

How are you really doing today, in the words you would never put in an email?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Marcus wrote his notebooks to no one but himself, taking account of how he was really doing. Honest self-report was the practice, not performance.

Buddhism · Satipatthana Sutta

The teaching is to know the mind as it is, a tense mind as tense, a calm mind as calm, without dressing it up. Accurate inward reporting is the ground of everything else.

Tao Te Ching 33

Knowing others is a kind of cleverness. Knowing yourself is the real clarity, and it starts with telling yourself the truth about your own state.
