Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,

What does Exodus 12:1 mean?

The command that begins the Passover reaches the higher faculties while they are still held in the lower body. Egypt is the dense material state, the flesh and its bondage, the darkened land where consciousness lies buried in matter before it moves toward release.

The command that begins the Passover reaches the higher faculties while they are still held in the lower body. Egypt is the dense material state, the flesh and its bondage, the darkened land where consciousness lies buried in matter before it moves toward release. It is here, not in freedom, that the inner voice first speaks, because the work of rising always begins inside the very condition it aims to leave.

Moses is the drawing-out power that leads awareness up from the waters of the senses, and Aaron is the voice that carries the inner word into speech. That the LORD speaks to them within Egypt shows the higher law entering a person exactly where he is bound. The awakening starts in the middle of the flesh, addressing the faculties that will carry it out.

Live Exodus 12:1 today

  1. Start one small good thing today in the middle of the mess, without cleaning up first. Ten minutes of quiet in the unmade bed, in the car outside work, with the dishes still in the sink.
  2. Say the kind or honest thing to someone now, in the middle of a strained week, rather than saving it for when things settle. Things rarely settle.
  3. When the day is already going badly and you want to write it off, pick the next ten minutes instead. The turn does not need a fresh start, it needs you here.

Zen

The practice does not wait for better conditions. You begin exactly where you are standing, in this kitchen, in this mood, at this hour.

Buddhism

The lotus grows out of mud, not out of clean water. The mess is the only available ground.

You will not find a quieter life somewhere else to begin living well in. The place you are stuck is the place the work starts.
