Exodus 12:11 Meaning This Is How You Shall Eat It

This is how you shall eat it: with your belt on your waist, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste: it is Yahweh’s Passover.

The passage out of bondage is taken by a being already gathered and standing, not lounging in the old comfort. The loins bound tight are the generative and vital centers held under control so their force is not scattered. The feet shod are the understanding covered and ready, protected against the harsh ground of the lower world. The staff in hand is the spine itself, the upright rod of power a person leans on and rises by. This is eaten quickly because the crossing over, the moment consciousness passes from the flesh-bound state into the free one, does not wait on hesitation.

Everything about the posture says a being poised to move. When the awareness is ready to step past its old limits, it does so with its energies collected, its footing sure, and its inner pillar in its grasp.

Loins girded: the generative and vital centers bound and held so their energy is concentrated rather than spilled Shoes on the feet: the understanding shod and guarded, prepared to walk the rough lower ground Staff: the spine, the upright rod of inner power a person leans on and ascends by Passover: the crossing of consciousness from the flesh-bound state into the freed state within

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

A body dressed for a journey believes in that journey long before the mind gets around to arguing about it.

Dressing for a road that has not opened yet installs belief below the level of argument. A staff in the hand sets a state of expectancy, expectancy produces alertness, and alertness is what lets a household move on the first word instead of the third. The same meal eaten reclining rehearses another night of slavery.

Deliverance moves at a speed that does not wait for anyone to get organized, which is why readiness here reaches all the way down to what is on a person's feet. Yahweh set the hour and Yahweh brought the rescue; being dressed for it was the one part left to them. Eating unprepared costs nobody the offer of freedom; it costs them the ability to move with it when it opens.

  1. Do the thing you have been circling for weeks within the first hour you are awake, before you check anything. One phone call, one email, one hard sentence typed and sent.
  2. Tell one person today the thing you have been rehearsing in your head and never saying. Keep it short and kind, and say it out loud rather than waiting for the perfect moment.
  3. When the stressful message lands, stand up, feel your feet on the floor, and answer from there instead of from a slump in the chair. Your body gets ready before your head catches up.

Zen

Sit as if you were about to stand, stand as if you were about to walk. Readiness is a posture of the whole person, not a thought about the future.

Stoicism · Seneca

The one who has already packed is not thrown by the news. Comfort left too long in place becomes a chain you forget you are wearing.

Bhagavad Gita 2

Rise and do what is yours to do, with your energies gathered and your mind steady. The hour of acting does not wait for you to feel ready.
