Exodus 12:15 · World English Bible

Exodus 12:15 Meaning Seven Days You Shall Eat Unleavened Bread

‘Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread; even the first day you shall put away yeast out of your houses, for whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.

What does Exodus 12:15 mean?

Leaven is the swelling of the ego, the puffing agent that inflates the bread of the self with pride and old corruption, and putting it out of the houses is clearing it from the chambers of the body. The number 7 is the full span of completion, the whole cycle of purification through which the flat, unpuffed self must be eaten, day after day, until the passage is finished.

The house is the body, and every room of it must be swept of the rising influence before the higher state can pass over.

What swells the sense of self with vanity is the very thing that severs a person from the ordered inner kingdom, so the work is to keep the self flat and clean through the whole cycle.

Unleavened bread: the flat, unpuffed self, consciousness kept clear of pride and the old swelling of ego Leaven: the puffing agent of vanity and corruption that inflates the ego and rots the inner bread 7 days: the complete cycle of purification, the full span in which the self is cleansed of its swelling Houses: the chambers of the body that must be swept clean of the ego's rising influence

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

A ritual burns the memory of deliverance into every generation that follows. Leaven is the old corruption, the fermented remnant of a life lived in bondage, and it has to be swept out before the passage can hold. Seven days without it. The ordinance is deliberate and repeated because belief does not sustain itself.

The spirit that calls a people out of tyranny must be affirmed again and again, even when no sea parts and no visible hand rescues them. That is the hard part. You have to trust the ascendancy of what draws mankind upward before you can see any proof of it. Cut the old ferment out, and keep cutting it, or the freedom you were given quietly rots back into slavery. Remembering is the labor that keeps deliverance from being undone.

Live Exodus 12:15 today

  1. Do one good thing today and tell no one. Not a post, not a mention in passing, not a hint. Let it stay yours.
  2. In your next conversation, give away a credit you could have kept. Say the other person's name for the idea that was partly theirs, and mean it.
  3. When you catch yourself adding the detail that makes you look better, the busier schedule, the bigger number, the harder week, stop and give the plain version. Flat, and true.

Where today was I quietly making myself bigger, and what would the honest size have been?

Tao Te Ching 22

The one who does not put himself forward is seen clearly. Puff yourself up and you fill the room with yourself and nothing else gets in.

Buddhism

The swelling sense of me is the hook that catches every other trouble. Let it go flat and most of the suffering has nothing to hang on.

The heart is a house, and vanity is the smoke that blackens every room. Sweeping it is not one morning's work but a daily one.
