Exodus 12:9 Meaning Don’t Eat It Raw

Don’t eat it raw, nor boiled at all with water, but roasted with fire; with its head, its legs and its inner parts.

What does Exodus 12:9 mean?

The lower nature must be taken up in meditation and consumed by inner heat, not left unworked and not slackened by the emotions, but wholly transformed by the risen energy that climbs the spine. Raw flesh is the lower thought untouched; softened in water is that same nature diluted and made loose by feeling, which changes nothing; but flesh roasted with fire is the whole lower self met by the serpent-power, the current that rises from the base and burns through a person until nothing of the old appetite is left uncooked.

The lower nature must be taken up in meditation and consumed by inner heat, not left unworked and not slackened by the emotions, but wholly transformed by the risen energy that climbs the spine. Head, legs, and inward parts are eaten together because the transformation must take the whole person, the higher mind, the will that carries the body, and the seat of feeling within. All of it passes through the same fire. This is thought purified by real inner work, and its proof is not a vision but a changed life.

Water: the emotional nature that softens and dilutes, leaving the lower self loose and unchanged Fire: the serpent-energy rising up the spine, the inner heat that transforms the lower nature Head: the higher mind Legs: the will that carries the body Inward parts: the seat of feeling deep within a person

Live Exodus 12:9 today

  1. Take one habit you have talked about changing for months and do the smallest real version of it today, once, with no announcement and no plan to post about it.
  2. When you feel the pull to vent about something to a friend for the fifth time, ask instead what one thing you could actually do, and do that before the day ends. Feeling it again is not moving.
  3. Under pressure this week, when you feel the old reaction heating up, stay with it in your body for three slow breaths without acting or explaining it away. Let the heat do its work instead of leaking it out sideways.

Where am I settling for feeling moved instead of being changed?

The same truth in other traditions

Hinduism · Patanjali's Yoga Sutras

The inner heat of steady discipline is what burns the roots of old habit. Thinking about change leaves the root intact; the fire reaches it.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Do not tell people what you have learned. Show them a changed life, or admit you only learned the words.

Zen

A mind merely wet with feeling washes nothing clean. Sitting with the whole of yourself, body and will and heart together, is the work.
