Exodus 14:16 Meaning Lift Up Your Rod

Lift up your rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it. Then the children of Israel shall go into the middle of the sea on dry ground.

What does Exodus 14:16 mean?

Instructions arrive for the direction you have already committed to walking, never for the one you are still considering. The tools come after the commitment, never before, which is why so many people feel permanently under-resourced.

Instructions arrive for the direction you have already committed to walking, never for the one you are still considering.

The tools come after the commitment, never before, which is why so many people feel permanently under-resourced. Pressure behind and impossibility in front is the exact condition under which a should collapses into complaint and a must starts asking what is already in hand.

God issues a rod rather than a boat, because the means look absurdly small beside the obstacle right up until the standard makes them the only thing worth lifting. The command set the belief, the belief set the state, and that state is what puts feet on a seabed. Keep the option of turning back and the water stays water, and the decade gets spent rehearsing what could have been done with better tools.

Live Exodus 14:16 today

  1. Pick the thing you keep researching instead of starting, and take the smallest real step today with whatever you already have. Not the right tool, the one on your desk.
  2. Tell one person what you have decided, out loud, in plain words. Not "I'm thinking about it." Say the decision, and let them hold you to it.
  3. When something blocks you this afternoon and you feel the pull to retreat, ask what is already in your hands instead of what you are missing. Then use it.

What have you been waiting to be equipped for, when the equipment only shows up after you move?

Tao Te Ching

The journey of a thousand miles begins where your foot actually lands. The road reveals itself to the one already walking, not to the one weighing whether to go.

Zen · Dogen

The practice is not preparation for awakening, it is awakening. Nothing is understood from the edge of the mat, only from sitting down on it.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Do not ask for better circumstances. Ask what is in your hands right now, because that is the only material you were ever given to work with.
