Exodus 15:16 · World English Bible

Exodus 15:16 Meaning Terror and Dread Falls on Them

Terror and dread falls on them. By the greatness of your arm they are as still as a stone, until your people pass over, Yahweh, until the people you have purchased pass over.

What does Exodus 15:16 mean?

The people had just walked through the sea on dry ground, and now they sing of what held them safe. Behind them the great powers that terrified them stand frozen, still as a stone.

Ego v. Being

The people had just walked through the sea on dry ground, and now they sing of what held them safe. Behind them the great powers that terrified them stand frozen, still as a stone. A raging force is not stopped by more noise or a bigger army but by a stillness that reaches from beyond any threat.

The same thing happens in us. When the mind grows quiet, the old fears that once thundered lose their motion and cannot follow. That silence is called here the greatness of thine arm, a strength without strain. Held by it, a person passes safely through what looked impassable, and the panic that chased them simply goes quiet.

  1. When a worry starts thundering in your head at night, do not argue with it. Stay still, let it keep talking, and watch it slow down because you gave it nothing to push against.
  2. Next time a group chat or a family conversation starts heating up, be the one who does not raise their voice. One calm person in the room changes the temperature of the whole room.
  3. Before you reply to the email or message that spiked your heart rate, put the phone face down and breathe twice. Answer from the quiet, not from the spike.

What has been chasing you that might stop if you stopped running?

Tao Te Ching 16

Return to stillness and the churning settles on its own. Stillness is not weakness, it is the root that the storm cannot pull up.

Zen

There is an old image of a muddy pool: stir it and you see nothing, leave it alone and it clears itself. The mind works the same way, and the fear in it loses its motion.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Marcus wrote that the mind free of agitation is a fortress. Nothing outside you has to be defeated once you stop handing it your reaction.
