Exodus 16:10 · World English Bible
As Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, Yahweh’s glory appeared in the cloud.
They were murmuring, lost in complaint about bread and the past they had left behind. Then they turned and looked toward the emptiness of the wilderness, and there, in the very place that seemed barren, a radiance appeared.

EGO & BEING
They were murmuring, lost in complaint about bread and the past they had left behind. Then they turned and looked toward the emptiness of the wilderness, and there, in the very place that seemed barren, a radiance appeared. This is not accidental. The presence shows itself when attention is drawn away from the noise of grievance and toward the open, uncluttered space of what is.
The cloud is form, and within it shines the formless. When you look at the emptiness with quiet attention rather than fear, you begin to sense the luminous stillness that fills it. The glory was always near; they only needed to stop grumbling and look.

ESOTERIC
When the assembled powers of a person turn their attention toward the empty, untrained region of the self, the higher presence shows itself veiled. The wilderness is the barren inner ground not yet cultivated, the place of testing where the ordinary self is stripped of its supports, and to look toward it is to face the part of consciousness still unformed. The cloud is the covering through which spirit appears without being seen directly, the glory made bearable to a self that could not endure it unveiled. The congregation of Israel is the gathered faculties of the striving mind, brought to attention as the divine light becomes present at the edge of their own wilderness.
The revelation comes precisely as they look into the emptiness, because it is in the unfilled and tested places of a person that the higher presence chooses to be felt, always through a veil rather than in the open.
The wilderness: the untrained, barren region of the inner self, the place of testing where the ordinary supports fall away. The cloud: the veil through which spirit becomes present to consciousness without being seen directly, the glory made bearable.

SUFISM
They had been grumbling, and the sick heart in complaint forgets every past mercy the moment its stomach turns. The cure is to turn away from the churn of appetite, toward the empty place where nothing of theirs could help. Attention itself becomes a kind of repentance.
And it is there, in the wilderness they dreaded, that the glory shows. Light needs no palace; it can rest in a plain cloud over bare ground. The Hidden chooses the humble container on purpose, so people find Him in the very stretch of life they wanted to escape.
Ego v. Being lens
What might you see today if you stopped narrating what is missing?
The use of a cup is in the hollow, and the use of a room is in the empty space. What seems like nothing is the very thing that holds everything.
Nan-in poured tea for a learned visitor until the cup overflowed, then said a full cup can take nothing more. A mind already full of its own complaint has no room for what is in front of it.
The Buddha spoke of a second arrow: the first is what happens, the second is the resisting and complaining we add. Drop the second and the present moment is plain and bright again.
