Murmuring is the sound a people makes once it has handed its burden to someone else and discovered that freedom is harder than bondage. They wanted out of Egypt, and now that they have it, the desert terrifies them, so they turn on the two men who led them. A whole congregation has abdicated its own responsibility and propped a savior up in its place. The abdication does not vanish. It curdles into complaint, and the complaint hunts for a target.

The danger cuts both ways. A man elevated by everyone else's cowardice starts to believe he is owed the throne, and that intoxication is where tyranny is born. Who is he to refuse when the crowd insists he become their god? Better to feel the weight of that question than to enjoy the elevation. A people that will not carry itself makes tyrants out of its rescuers, and then blames them for the desert it was too frightened to cross alone.

  1. Catch yourself mid complaint today, about your boss, the government, your partner, and finish the sentence differently: here is the piece of this that is mine.
  2. Instead of adding to the group chat pile on, carry one small part of the thing everyone is annoyed about. Just do it, no announcement.
  3. If people start treating you like the one with all the answers, say plainly what you do not know. Being flattered into the role of rescuer is how good people go bad.

Where are you waiting for someone else to fix the desert you chose to walk into?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

Blame is the mark of someone who has handed their own work to another. Ask what part of this is actually yours to carry, and carry that, and the complaining dies down.

Tao Te Ching 17

The best leader leaves people saying they did it themselves. A crowd that needs a hero will crown one, and the crown is what ruins him.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

It is easy to see the fault in the one who leads and hard to see your own. The grumbling mind always finds a target outside itself.
