EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

A day is set apart where the gathering stops. What is needed has already been provided the day before, so no one has to scramble at dawn. The provision was given in advance, and the striving can rest.

Enough is already here for the person who abides where they are. So much restlessness comes from leaving the present spot, chasing the next thing across the horizon of the mind. Staying put, without reaching, a person discovers that the moment they stand in was never lacking. Rest was never something to earn. A person only steps into what the sabbath already holds out to them.

Live Exodus 16:29 today

  1. Stay in one room for an hour without going to get anything, without opening another tab. Let the restlessness come up and do not act on it.
  2. When you are with someone today, stop glancing at your phone to see where else you could be. Being fully in one conversation is a gift you can actually give.
  3. If you catch yourself scrolling for something better, a better plan, a better job, a better weekend, close the app and look at what you already have in front of you. Give this hour a chance before trading it in.

Where are you trying to get to, and what is already here?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 46

The one who knows enough already has enough. Chasing more is how a full life starts to feel thin.

Stoicism · Seneca

Seneca wrote that it is not the man who has little who is poor, but the man who craves more. The lack is in the reaching, not in the life.

Zen

When hungry, eat. When tired, sleep. The whole instruction is to be doing the thing you are actually in, with nothing held back for somewhere else.
