Exodus 17:11 Meaning When Moses Held Up His Hand

When Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed. When he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

What does Exodus 17:11 mean?

A leader's posture is a weapon, and holding it up is work that no one can do alone. A held posture transmits certainty to people who cannot see the outcome from where they are standing, and certainty changes how hard a man swings.

Self-Help

A leader's posture is a weapon, and holding it up is work that no one can do alone.

A held posture transmits certainty to people who cannot see the outcome from where they are standing, and certainty changes how hard a man swings. Doubt travels the same route just as fast and shortens the stroke.

Fatigue is the real opponent in that arrangement, because a peak state is produced rather than stored, and the muscles holding one up give out on a schedule of their own. Hence the arms braced by other hands. Anyone who carries responsibility for the state of other people and refuses to be propped up will drop it at the hour it costs the most.

Live Exodus 17:11 today

  1. Before a meeting or a hard conversation, take two minutes to set yourself. How you walk in sets the room more than what you say in it.
  2. Ask one person for the specific help you have been too proud to ask for. Name the actual thing, not a vague "I'm swamped."
  3. When you are running on empty and still responsible for other people's mood, say so to someone you trust rather than pushing through. Let them hold an arm up.

Who is already willing to prop you up, if you would just let them know you are tired?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

When you cannot carry the weight alone, there is no shame in asking for a hand. Do not be too proud to accept help, like a soldier who needs another to lift him onto the wall.

Confucius · Analects

The one in front sets the tone, and the people beneath take their bearing from his bearing. Steady yourself and they steady; waver and so do they.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

Do not separate yourself from the community, and do not judge your neighbour until you stand in their place. No one holds up anything worthwhile on their own strength.
