Exodus 18:23 Meaning If You Will Do This Thing

If you will do this thing, and God commands you so, then you will be able to endure, and all these people also will go to their place in peace.

What does Exodus 18:23 mean?

Kalyāṇamittatā: Admirable friendship The good friend whose telling you the truth is treated as the whole of the path, not half of it. Counsel here comes from a father-in-law who walked into the camp from outside, watched one full day of judging, and spoke before moving on.

Kalyāṇamittatā: Admirable friendship The good friend whose telling you the truth is treated as the whole of the path, not half of it. Counsel here comes from a father-in-law who walked into the camp from outside, watched one full day of judging, and spoke before moving on. Someone standing outside your routine sees its shape, the way a friend notices you limping before you do; and hanging the plan on "and God commands you so" keeps good advice from hardening into the adviser's authority.

Attakilamathānuyoga: Self-torment One of the two dead ends, tried and then abandoned. Sitting alone from morning until evening while the line of people never shortens carries the flavor of holy work, and that flavor is what makes it hard to put down. Grinding yourself down buys nothing for the ones still waiting at the back of the line.

Viriya: Energy Effort as a faculty, tuned rather than maximal. Being able to endure comes from a pitch of effort you can hold for years, the way a guitar string snaps when wound too tight and buzzes when left slack. Sending the small cases down to captains of tens and fifties lowers the tension while the same work still gets done.

Khanti: Patient endurance Patience, the capacity to stand under strain without breaking. "Able to endure" reaches past gritting through one more long day toward still doing this next month and the year after. Weight shared across a structure travels a long way; weight resting on one pair of shoulders ends in collapse.

Sāmaggī: Concord Harmony in a community, counted as its own kind of happiness. Going to their place in peace means going home with the case heard and closed, the quarrel over an ox or a debt finished that same day. An unheard grievance sits in a camp like a stone in your shoe, and the whole march is slower for it.

Live Exodus 18:23 today

  1. Look at your week and find the one task you kept because only you can do it right. Hand it to someone today, even knowing they will do it at eighty percent.
  2. Ask a person outside your routine, a friend, your partner, someone who sees you at the end of the day, what they see wearing you down. They have been watching longer than you think.
  3. When the day runs long and the queue has not shortened, stop at a set hour anyway. The line will still be there tomorrow, and so will you only if you leave tonight.

Fill a cup to the brim and it spills; keep sharpening a blade and it dulls. Retire when the work is done, and you will last.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

It is not your duty to finish the work, nor are you free to abandon it. Both halves of that sentence are mercy.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

We were made for cooperation, like two hands or two rows of teeth. To work against that and carry everything alone is to work against your own nature.
