EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

There is a rest deeper than stopping your labor for a day. Most human doing is compulsive, driven by a restless mind that believes it must always be busy becoming something. Setting the work down, letting every part of your life grow quiet, is a way of remembering what lies beneath all that activity.

In the stillness that remains when you stop, you touch Being itself, the aliveness that was never produced by any of your effort. This is the true meaning of rest. Not idleness, but stepping out of the endless doing long enough to feel that you already are, prior to anything you accomplish.

The list is what matters here, and its reach is deliberate. Rest is extended downward through the whole hierarchy a person commands, to children, to servants, to the ox, even to the foreigner who has no standing. Dominion has been badly misread as license to exploit. To subdue is not to command and consume but to put everything in its proper place, and that includes granting the creatures beneath you a share in the ceasing.

A man who works his household and his animals without pause is not strong. He is a tyrant, and tyranny corrodes the one who practices it. The order you rule over must be sustainable, or it collapses and takes you with it. The seventh day binds the master. Authority worth the name is measured by the restraint it shows toward everything under its care.

Live Exodus 20:10 today

  1. Take an afternoon with no plan to improve anything, no learning, no sorting, no catching up. Just be a person in a room or on a walk.
  2. Let the people around you rest too. Do not hand out one more task at five o'clock, and do not make your own stillness depend on everyone else staying busy.
  3. When you feel the pull to pick up the phone the second you sit down, let your hands stay still instead. That small nothing is where you remember you exist apart from what you get done.

Who are you when you are not accomplishing anything?

Tao Te Ching 37

Without forcing, things settle into their own order. Most of our busyness adds nothing but strain.

Judaism · Talmud

The rabbis said rest is not what you earn at the end of the work, it is a gift you simply enter. One day a week you are a person, not a producer.

Zen

Sitting quietly, doing nothing, the season turns and the grass grows on its own. Your life was never waiting on your effort to be alive.
