Exodus 20:21 Meaning The People Stayed at a Distance

The people stayed at a distance, and Moses came near to the thick darkness where God was.

What does Exodus 20:21 mean?

Most people stand at a distance from the depth of their own being. The mind loves what it can see and name, so it keeps to the daylight of thought, afraid of the formless stillness underneath.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Most people stand at a distance from the depth of their own being. The mind loves what it can see and name, so it keeps to the daylight of thought, afraid of the formless stillness underneath. That stillness feels like darkness because there is nothing in it for the mind to grasp.

Yet the sacred is found precisely there. To draw near the thick darkness is to let your thoughts fall silent and enter the unknown within you, the spacious awareness that has no shape and needs none. What the mind flees as emptiness is the very presence you have been seeking, and you meet it only when you stop keeping your distance and grow still.

  1. Sit in the dark for five minutes before bed without a screen, a podcast, or a plan. Let the not knowing be comfortable instead of something to fill.
  2. When someone asks you something you cannot answer, say you do not know and stay in the conversation. Most people are relieved when honesty replaces performance.
  3. In the middle of an uncertain stretch at work or at home, resist the urge to grab the first explanation that calms you down. Stay with the open question a while longer and see what comes.

What are you keeping your distance from because you cannot put it into words?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 21

The deepest source is dim and hard to name, and still everything comes out of it. What the mind cannot grasp is not therefore empty.

Zen

Zen points at what cannot be put into words and asks you to stop reaching for the words. The not knowing is not a failure, it is the door.

Christian mysticism · The Cloud of Unknowing

The anonymous author says God is met in a cloud of unknowing, reached by love and not by thinking. You arrive by letting go of what you were sure of.
