Exodus 21:28 Meaning If a Bull Gores a Man

If a bull gores a man or a woman to death, the bull shall surely be stoned, and its meat shall not be eaten; but the owner of the bull shall not be held responsible.

What does Exodus 21:28 mean?

The ox is the raw animal strength in a person, the heavy brute force of the lower nature that plows and labors. When that force turns and gores, when unmastered instinct kills the man or woman it should have served, the animal energy itself must be put down and its flesh refused.

The ox is the raw animal strength in a person, the heavy brute force of the lower nature that plows and labors. When that force turns and gores, when unmastered instinct kills the man or woman it should have served, the animal energy itself must be put down and its flesh refused. What has run wild and taken life inside a person is not to be taken in again as food; it is stoned, brought to a hard stop.

Yet the higher self that owns this strength goes free. The governing consciousness is cleared once it has faced and stopped the beast, for the fault lay in the loosed animal, not in the one who rules it.

Ox: the raw animal strength and brute instinct in a person, the laboring lower force that serves when governed and destroys when loosed Man and woman: the reasoning and feeling powers within, the active and receptive halves of one being that the beast can slay

Live Exodus 21:28 today

  1. When something today gets your blood up, a notification, a comment, a bill, name the force rather than the target. Say to yourself, that is anger, loud and strong, and let the ten seconds pass before your thumbs move.
  2. If your temper already got out and hurt someone close, do not let it feed. Say plainly that it was yours and out of line, and do not retell the story in a way that makes it taste good again.
  3. When pressure spikes at work, put your hands somewhere the force cannot do damage. Walk the hallway, carry something, step outside for two minutes, and come back to the thread with the same energy steering instead of goring.

What strength in me is doing real work, and what strength is loose?

Upanishads

The senses are powerful horses, the body the chariot, and the mind holds the reins. Loosed, they drag the rider off the road, held, they carry him exactly where he meant to go.

Dhammapada

A wild elephant in rut is dangerous, but the untrained mind does more damage. Trained, that same strength becomes the thing that carries you.

Stoicism · Seneca

Anger is a brief madness you let in, and it turns on the house that sheltered it. Catch it at the door and you are still yourself, let it loose and it breaks what you love.
