Exodus 21:4 · World English Bible

Exodus 21:4 Meaning If His Master Gives Him a Wife

If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master’s, and he shall go out by himself.

What does Exodus 21:4 mean?

The feeling-nature and everything it has produced belong to the flesh that formed them. A wife taken while still in service is the emotions bound to the body, and the sons and daughters are the works and attachments those emotions gave birth to inside that bondage.

Esoteric

The feeling-nature and everything it has produced belong to the flesh that formed them. A wife taken while still in service is the emotions bound to the body, and the sons and daughters are the works and attachments those emotions gave birth to inside that bondage. When the energy is freed to rise, it does not carry the old feelings and their fruits up with it; those stay behind with the body that owned them.

So the released force goes out alone. The current that climbs from the base of the spine leaves behind the emotional ties and the deeds bred in the lower state, and rises by itself toward the higher center, unweighted by what belonged to the master below.

Live Exodus 21:4 today

  1. When an old feeling comes up today, let it be there without following it into everything it built. You can sit with a sadness for a minute without reopening the group chat, the folder of photos, or the argument it wants to restart.
  2. With one person today, talk about where you are now instead of defending who you were when you met. If you catch yourself reaching for the old version of the story, let that version stay behind and say the plainer thing.
  3. In a tense moment, maybe traffic or a meeting that goes sideways, do the next thing without dragging the mood into it. The feeling can stay at the last exit while you keep driving.

What am I still carrying that belongs to a version of me I have already left?

Bhagavad Gita

Action done while still identified with the body leaves its fruit behind in the body. What rises is the one who acted, not the harvest he gathered.

Buddhism

At the crossing you leave the raft on the shore. Carrying it on your back up the mountain is not gratitude, it is confusion about what the raft was for.

Stoicism · Epictetus

What was never yours cannot leave with you. The attachments formed in your borrowed circumstances stay with those circumstances, and you walk out carrying only what is actually your own.
