PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

A farmer looks at his first grain, his first wine, his firstborn child, and something in him says this is his doing. That claim is the danger. The oldest peoples felt this fertile power never came from them; it moved through them from a deeper source they could not command.

So they gave the first and best back at once, because a man who waits soon convinces himself the harvest was his own work. Giving up the firstborn was how he admitted, before that pride could harden, that life was handed to him and was never only his to keep.

  1. When something goes well today, a project that lands, a child who turns out kind, catch the first thought that says "I did that." Let it come, then add out loud or in your head: and much of this was handed to me.
  2. Give away the first and best of something today, not the leftovers. The good hour instead of the tired one, the full attention at dinner instead of what is left after the last email.
  3. In a work conversation where credit is being distributed, name someone else's part before you name your own. Do it early, before the pride has time to set.

What in your life do you call "mine" that was actually handed to you?

Do the work, release the fruit. The moment you grip the result as yours, you have mistaken yourself for the source.
