Exodus 25:8 Meaning Let Them Make Me a Sanctuary

Let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.

What does Exodus 25:8 mean?

You are asked to make a sanctuary, and at once you imagine walls and gold and a roof against the sky. But the dwelling place that is wanted is an inner one.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

You are asked to make a sanctuary, and at once you imagine walls and gold and a roof against the sky. But the dwelling place that is wanted is an inner one. When you become still, when attention rests in this moment rather than racing through the corridors of thought, a spaciousness opens within you.

That spaciousness is the true sanctuary. The sacred does not travel from far away to fill it. It was always present, waiting only for the inner room in which you could finally notice it dwelling among you.

Live Exodus 25:8 today

  1. Clear one small physical space today, a corner of the desk, a shelf, the car seat, and leave it empty instead of filling it. Let the emptiness be the point.
  2. Give someone five minutes where you are not doing anything else. Screen down, body turned toward them. You are making a room for them to be in.
  3. When the day gets loud, take three slow breaths and feel the space your body takes up in the chair. That space is still there under all the noise, and it does not need the noise to stop first.

Where in my life am I building walls when what is needed is more room?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 11

The clay is shaped into a pot, but it is the hollow inside that holds anything. Walls and a door make a room, and the empty space is what you actually live in.

Hinduism · Chandogya Upanishad

There is a space within the heart no bigger than a seed, and all of it is held there. What you have been searching the world for is kept inside you.

Buddhism

The Buddha told his students to be their own refuge, and to seek no other. The shelter is not built somewhere, it is what you become when attention settles.
