The vail is the partition inside the body that hangs between the ordinary mind and the innermost holy place, the woven curtain of the flesh that hides the deepest consciousness from the outer self. Its colors read the levels a person is made of. Blue is the spirit and the heaven-mind, the highest register; scarlet is the blood and the life of the flesh, the lowest; purple is the 2 blended, the union of spirit and body that the mixture of blue and red produces. The fine twined linen is the pure refined substance the whole partition is woven from.

The cherubims worked into the cloth are the twin guardian forces set again at the threshold, present in the very weave of the veil so that the inner sanctuary is watched from within its own boundary. The curtain is the layered structure of the human being itself, hung across the body to separate the outer waking self from the hidden holy chamber where the divine is met.

Live Exodus 26:31 today

  1. Sometime today, close the laptop and sit with nothing on for five minutes. The restlessness that shows up first is the curtain, not the wall, and it thins if you stay.
  2. With someone close, let one thing through that you usually keep behind the screen, a worry, a hope, something unfinished. Say the real version, not the tidy one.
  3. When you feel yourself go flat and polite under pressure, at work or at a family dinner, take one slow breath and feel your chest. You can stay civil without going numb, and the breath is how you keep the door from locking.

What have I hung in front of my own depth, and when did I last look behind it?

The same truth in other traditions

Hinduism · Upanishads

A person is layered like sheaths, the food body, the breath, the mind, each one a covering over something finer, and the innermost is reached by passing through them.

Sufism · Rumi

There is a curtain between you and the beloved, and it is woven of you. The veil is not punishment, it is the only thing thin enough to be lifted.

Zen

The gate has no gate, yet it is guarded. What stands at the threshold is your own face.
