Exodus 28:2 · World English Bible
You shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty.
Jalāl and Jamāl: Majesty and beauty Ibn Arabi pairs these as two faces God turns toward people: awe that makes a person step back, and beauty that draws them close. Someone set apart for service needs both at once, since awe by itself freezes a person and sweetness by itself makes them careless.

SUFISM
Jalāl and Jamāl: Majesty and beauty Ibn Arabi pairs these as two faces God turns toward people: awe that makes a person step back, and beauty that draws them close. Someone set apart for service needs both at once, since awe by itself freezes a person and sweetness by itself makes them careless. Together they hold someone upright and warm in the same moment.
God is beautiful and loves beauty: care for outward things is welcome The Prophet said this, and Sufis repeat it whenever someone treats plainness as holier than splendor. A person handed something fine can feel guilty, as if the honor pulled attention away from God. The saying settles that worry, since care for how things look answers something in God rather than competing with it.
Khirqa: the cloak a teacher places on a student Sufis mark someone's entry into the path by placing a robe on them, always by another's hand. The honor arrives from outside, so the wearer cannot mistake it for something they made. Standing out then feels less like a claim about themselves and more like a duty someone trusted them with.
Riyāʾ: showing off Al-Ghazali writes at length about the moment good work quietly bends toward whoever is watching. Fine appearance makes that easy, because the eye that belongs on the work slips over to how the work looks. His test is simple: whether someone would take the same care with nobody watching, and most know the answer at once.
Libās al-taqwā: the garment of God-consciousness The Quran names an inner clothing and calls it better than anything worn on the body. Someone dressed for an honored role can feel a gap open between how they appear and what they are. The inner garment closes that gap, and it stays with a person long after the role is handed on.

When you take trouble over how something looks, is it for the thing itself, or for the eyes you imagine on it?
A cook's knife stays sharp for years because he works with the grain of the animal rather than hacking at it. The skill is beautiful to watch, but he is not performing it, he is simply doing the work well, and the beauty is a side effect of the care.
Dogen wrote detailed instructions for the monastery cook: how to handle the rice, how to wash the vegetables, how to set things down. Attention to the surface of ordinary things is not a distraction from the deeper life, it is where the deeper life actually happens.
Epictetus said that when you are given a role to play, your job is to play it well, and the choosing of the role was never yours. The honor of the part does not belong to the actor, so there is nothing in it to boast about and nothing in it to refuse.
