Ego v. Being

A craftsman is filled with spirit, and out of that fullness come wisdom, understanding, and skill of every kind. The gift is not manufactured by his cleverness. It flows into him and then out through his hands.

When a person is present and undivided, the doing seems to happen through them rather than by them. The narrow, anxious self steps aside, and a deeper intelligence works the wood and stone. The finest craft is born this way. It comes not from straining, but from being so quietly open that the spirit has room to move.

Live Exodus 31:3 today

  1. Do one piece of work today without checking how it is going. Write the thing, cook the meal, fix the thing, and stay in it instead of standing outside it grading yourself.
  2. Let someone else do a task their own way today, even if yours is faster. Watch them work without correcting, and see what they bring that you would not have.
  3. When a deadline tightens your chest, slow your hands instead of speeding them. Pressure makes the self loud, and the work goes better when you are not shouting at yourself.

Where am I straining at something that might go better if I got out of its way?

Taoism · Zhuangzi

The cook's knife never dulls because he stops trying to cut. He follows the openings already in the animal, and the blade goes where there is room.

Zen

The archer who wants to hit the target misses. When the shot is allowed to happen on its own, the arrow and the aim are one thing.

Bhagavad Gita 2

You have a right to the work, never to its fruits. Act fully and let go of the grip on how it turns out.
