Exodus 32:18 Meaning He Said
He said, “It isn’t the voice of those who shout for victory. It is not the voice of those who cry for being overcome; but the noise of those who sing that I hear.”

Exodus 32:18 · World English Bible
He said, “It isn’t the voice of those who shout for victory. It is not the voice of those who cry for being overcome; but the noise of those who sing that I hear.”
3 sounds rise from the camp of the body while the higher mind comes down from the mountain, and the descending awareness sorts them by pitch. The shout for mastery is the noise of appetites straining to conquer and rule the whole person, and the cry of being overcome is the moan of a nature already beaten down by its own indulgence.

ESOTERIC
3 sounds rise from the camp of the body while the higher mind comes down from the mountain, and the descending awareness sorts them by pitch. The shout for mastery is the noise of appetites straining to conquer and rule the whole person, and the cry of being overcome is the moan of a nature already beaten down by its own indulgence. What actually sounds below is neither the war-cry of victory nor the wail of defeat but the intoxicated singing around the molten calf, the lower self entranced with the golden image of its own desire. The body left to itself neither triumphs nor surrenders in struggle but drifts into the trance of worshipping its own gilded craving.
The mountain: the raised state of awareness above the body from which the higher mind comes down. The camp: the assembled appetites and habits of the body gathered below, out of sight of the higher self. The golden calf: the gilded image of desire the lower nature molds and adores in place of the unseen presence.
Esoteric lens
What have you been quietly circling and singing to lately, without ever calling it that?
Craving is not defeated by force and it does not surrender on its own. Left unexamined it simply grows, like a vine, and the one who follows it is carried along without ever deciding to go.
The five colors blind the eye, the five tones deafen the ear, the five flavors dull the tongue. Chasing after what delights the senses leaves a person restless and hollowed out, not conquered, just gone.
The soul can be lulled asleep by sweetness as easily as it can be beaten down by pain, and the sweeter sleep is the more dangerous one, because nobody cries out from it.
