CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

A man cannot face the overwhelming from nowhere. He needs a place to stand, something solid beneath him that will not shift when the ground of ordinary life gives way. The rock is that footing, the stable point from which even the unbearable can be met.

A person builds such footing before he needs it, in the ordinary days, by telling the truth and keeping his commitments. Then, when the storm arrives, he is not swept off. The rock is the accumulated weight of everything he did right beforehand.

Live Exodus 33:21 today

  1. Do one small steady thing today that nobody will see. Make the bed, walk the block, ten minutes of quiet before the screens open. You are laying stone.
  2. Keep one ordinary promise to a person today, the exact thing at the exact time you said. That is the footing getting thicker.
  3. When something goes wrong this week, pause before you react and ask what you already have under you. Then stand on it instead of scrambling.

What are you building now that you will be standing on a year from today?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Build the inner citadel in calm weather, because you cannot build it in a storm. The practice done on easy days is what carries the hard ones.

Zen

Sit when nothing is wrong, so that sitting is already in you when something is. The cushion is not for emergencies, it is what makes you steady during them.

Taoism · Tao Te Ching 59

Store up reserves quietly and early. Deep roots are what let a tree meet weather that knocks others over.
