EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Be ready in the morning. Rise before the day fills with demands and present yourself, alone, at the height. The mountaintop is not merely a place but a state, the raised and quiet attention in which you are lifted above the low chatter of ordinary mind and stand fully awake.

To present yourself is simply to be there, present, without agenda, offering nothing but your undivided attention. The encounter cannot be scheduled into a busy, distracted mind. So you climb into stillness and wait in the fresh silence, and it is precisely this readiness, this alert emptiness, that allows the meeting to happen.

Live Exodus 34:2 today

  1. Tomorrow morning, keep the phone face down for the first ten minutes you are awake. Sit with your coffee and the window and let the day meet you before the feed does.
  2. Before your first meeting or the first call with anyone, take sixty seconds alone in the car, the stairwell, the bathroom. Arrive as a person, not as a continuation of the last screen.
  3. When the morning is already a mess, late, kids shouting, three alerts at once, step outside the door for thirty seconds of cold air. Not to fix anything, just to be awake inside it.

What is the first thing I let into my mind in the morning, and did I choose it?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen

Dawn zazen comes before the day's business for a reason. The mind is nearest to clear water before the first stone is thrown in.

Hinduism · Brahmamuhurta

The hour before sunrise is held to be the clearest time to sit. What is given attention then colors everything that follows.

Stoicism · Seneca

Meet the morning on purpose. The one who drifts into the day is carried by it; the one who rises and sits with himself owns it.
