Exodus 34:30 Meaning When Aaron and All the Children

When Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come near him.

What does Exodus 34:30 mean?

A person could envy the shining face, wishing for a glow that makes others step back in awe. But the man did not know he shone, and that unknowing is the cure: the light stayed pure because he was not watching himself in it, having spent his hours turned toward God, not toward his own reflection.

Sufism

A person could envy the shining face, wishing for a glow that makes others step back in awe. But the man did not know he shone, and that unknowing is the cure: the light stayed pure because he was not watching himself in it, having spent his hours turned toward God, not toward his own reflection.

His face was a window, not the sun. It gave back a brightness borrowed from the mountain, and the fear it stirred was really reverence for the One glimpsed through a human face that had stood long enough in His light.

Live Exodus 34:30 today

  1. Do one good thing today that nobody will ever find out about, and leave it there. No screenshot, no story saved up for later, no mention of it at dinner.
  2. When you are with someone, let your attention rest fully on them instead of on how you are coming across. Put the phone face down and let them have your whole face.
  3. If someone praises you in a meeting or a group chat, take it in with a simple thank you and move the attention back to the work or to the person who helped. Resist the pull to perform the moment twice.

Tao Te Ching 22

The sage does not display himself, and so he shines. The moment a person starts polishing his own light, it dulls.

Zen

The moon does not try to appear in the water, and the water does not try to hold the moon. The reflection is perfect because neither one is working at it.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

A good man is like a vine that bears grapes: it gives fruit and asks for no witness. Looking around for admiration is already a second, smaller task than the first.
