The river is the flowing current of life-force in a person, and the dry land is the hardened, unresponsive outer nature that will not receive the inner voice. Pouring the living water onto that dry ground turns it to blood, which is the sign that pure animating energy, once it leaves its channel and meets stubborn matter, congeals into the heaviness of the mere flesh. Water is spirit in motion; blood is spirit brought down and thickened into the bodily life.
This is the third sign given when the 2 before it are refused, a descent that shows what becomes of the higher current when a person will not believe it. The living stream does not vanish; poured onto dryness it hardens, and the vital flow that could have nourished becomes the dense red weight of embodiment.
