Slavery does something to the soul that outlasts the chains. A people ground down for generations forgets it was ever meant for anything else. So the first work of deliverance is not the exodus but the reminder of who is speaking and to whom. Before the shackles fall, the spirit has to be told it has a name and a destiny.

The stretched-out arm is not a gentle rescue. Bondage does not release its captives politely, and setting people free requires judgment against whatever profits from their suffering. Liberation costs something and confronts someone. A power willing to reach down into the pit and pull is the only kind that ever breaks a prison open.

Live Exodus 6:6 today

  1. Write down one sentence about who you are that has nothing to do with your job, your output, or your usefulness to anyone. Keep it where you will see it tomorrow.
  2. Tell someone who has been worn thin lately what you actually see in them. Not encouragement in general, the specific thing.
  3. When you get spoken to today as if you were only a function, a ticket number, a seat in a meeting, do not argue. Hold quietly to the fact that the description is too small.

What have you come to believe about yourself that was only ever the pressure talking?

Stoicism · Epictetus

You have been treating yourself as a slave to things that only borrow their power from your consent. Remember who you are and the grip loosens.
