Exodus 8:22 · World English Bible

Exodus 8:22 Meaning I Will Set Apart in That Day

I will set apart in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there, to the end you may know that I am Yahweh on the earth.

What does Exodus 8:22 mean?

There is a place within you that the swarms cannot reach. While chaos spreads across the land of your circumstances, a sanctuary remains untouched, set apart and quiet.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

There is a place within you that the swarms cannot reach. While chaos spreads across the land of your circumstances, a sanctuary remains untouched, set apart and quiet. It is not a place you travel to. It is the still awareness at the center of you, present even now beneath the noise of thought.

To know I am in the midst of the earth is to find that presence, this sense of I Am, at the very heart of all form and all turmoil. When you discover that stillness in yourself, the plagues of life still come and go around you, but they no longer define who you are. You stay rooted in the one place they cannot enter.

Live Exodus 8:22 today

  1. Pick one small pocket of today, the walk to the car, the kettle boiling, and let it be an unplugged room. No screen, no music, just you and the quiet for two minutes.
  2. When a group chat turns into a pile-on and your thumbs want to fire back, put the phone face down and breathe until the urgency passes. You can answer later from a calmer place, or not at all.
  3. In the middle of a stressful stretch at work, feel your feet on the floor and your breath moving. The deadline is still there, and so is this quieter place that the deadline cannot get into.

Where is the part of you that today's noise never actually reached?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He wrote that people look for retreats in the countryside and by the sea, when at any moment they can retire into themselves. Nowhere is quieter than your own mind, if you will go there.

Taoism · Tao Te Ching 16

Return to the root and you find stillness. All around, things rise and fall and rush about, and the one who is rooted watches them come and go.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Like a solid rock that the wind cannot shake, a steady mind stands unmoved by praise and blame alike.
