What does Exodus 9:20 mean?

Belief is whatever a person acted on when the warning came, and everything else they claim to hold is only an opinion. A warning changes nothing until it is converted into felt pain, and most people never do the converting.

Belief is whatever a person acted on when the warning came, and everything else they claim to hold is only an opinion.

A warning changes nothing until it is converted into felt pain, and most people never do the converting. Everyone in that court heard identical words; only some let the hail fall on their own animals in advance, vividly enough that fear turned into urgency and urgency turned into hands on the gate.

The rest were not indifferent, they were weighing. Standing out in Pharaoh's house carried an immediate cost, and an immediate cost beats a distant one in nearly every person alive, which is why so much was left where it stood. Yahweh's word did identical work in both groups; the only variable was which pain each man rated as real. A person who waits for proof before moving pays for that proof with whatever was still out in the field.

Live Exodus 9:20 today

  1. There is a warning you have been reading past, a bank alert, a dentist reminder, a check engine light, a strange mole. Act on one of them today while it is still only a warning.
  2. When someone you trust tells you something uncomfortable about your health, your money or your marriage, do one concrete thing in the next day. Agreeing with them is not the same as moving.
  3. If acting on what you believe would look odd to the people around you at work, do it anyway and let it look odd. Bringing the animals in early always looks strange until the hail starts.

Which warning do you fully agree with and still have not moved for?

Do not tell me what you believe, show me how you live and I will tell you. Belief is only visible in what a person does when it costs something.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

A man who recites the teachings but does not act on them is a cowherd counting another's cattle. The words passed through him and changed nothing.

Tao Te Ching

Deal with a thing while it is still small, act before it arrives. Those who wait for it to be undeniable are already paying for it.
