Ezekiel 1:21 Meaning When Those Went

When those went, these went. When those stood, these stood. When those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up beside them; for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.

What does Ezekiel 1:21 mean?

The moving parts of your life rise and rest together, not because one commands the next, but because a single aliveness animates them all. The mind sees separate things acting on each other.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

The moving parts of your life rise and rest together, not because one commands the next, but because a single aliveness animates them all. The mind sees separate things acting on each other. Beneath the seeing there is one presence, and the many forms are only its motion.

The wheels do not decide to turn. They move because the spirit of the living creature is in them, the way your breath and your steps and your very awareness arise from something you did not invent. When you feel that one life moving as you, effort dissolves. You go when it goes and are still when it is still, carried by the aliveness that was always doing the moving.

Live Ezekiel 1:21 today

  1. When you get up from your chair today, let yourself feel the standing happen rather than ordering your body around. Your legs knew how to do this long before you had opinions about it.
  2. On your next call or coffee with someone, stop steering the conversation. Let it find its own rhythm, speak when something rises in you, go quiet when it doesn't, and see how much lighter it feels.
  3. When the day speeds up, deadlines stacked, phone buzzing, pause for one breath and let the breath arrive on its own instead of taking it. One unforced breath can show you who is actually running the machinery.

What in my day is already moving fine without my gripping it?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

The Tao does nothing, and nothing is left undone. Things grow and turn and settle by themselves, not because anyone pushes them, and the wise person moves the same way.

Bhagavad Gita 3

All action happens through the play of nature's forces, yet a person deluded by ego says, "I am the doer." Seeing clearly means seeing that the doing was never yours alone.

Zen

In spring the flowers open, in autumn the leaves fall. No one commands it. The same unforced aliveness is what is walking around wearing your name.
