Ezekiel 1:26 Meaning Above the Expanse That Was Over

Above the expanse that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone. On the likeness of the throne was a likeness as the appearance of a man on it above.

What does Ezekiel 1:26 mean?

At the very top of the great vision, above all the wheels and fire, sits not a force or a blaze of light but a figure shaped like a person. The highest thing the mind can picture of God still wears a human face.

This matters. The divine and the human are not strangers. The center of the soul, the part that quietly orders everything else, shows up as a person on a throne because that center is what a whole human being looks like from the inside. What rules at the top of the vision is the same wholeness each person is slowly growing toward.

Live Ezekiel 1:26 today

  1. When you catch yourself thinking the real thing is elsewhere, in a better version of you, a better year, a better job, pause and look at the person you actually are today. That is the material. There is no other.
  2. Treat one ordinary person today, a cashier, a coworker you find boring, your own child mid-tantrum, as if something of great worth lives in them. Not performed kindness, just actual attention.
  3. When you feel small in a room full of people who seem more impressive, stop measuring and stay yourself. The thing at the top of the vision looked like a person. You qualify.

Where have you been looking for something holy that was always wearing a human face?

The same truth in other traditions

Hinduism · the Upanishads

The deepest self and the ultimate reality are not two separate things. What sits at the summit and what sits in your chest are the same.

Sufism · al-Hallaj

He said the truth that cost him everything: what you are looking for is not far from the one looking. The distance you imagine is the only distance there is.

Zen · Linji

Stop looking for the holy outside yourself. The ordinary person in front of you, reading this, is where it is happening.
