Ezekiel 12:2 · World English Bible

Ezekiel 12:2 Meaning Son of Man

Son of man, you dwell in the middle of the rebellious house, who have eyes to see, and don’t see, who have ears to hear, and don’t hear; for they are a rebellious house.

What does Ezekiel 12:2 mean?

To have eyes and not see is to move through your days lost in a stream of thought, so absorbed in the mental commentary that the living world in front of you goes unnoticed. The rebellion is not wickedness.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

To have eyes and not see is to move through your days lost in a stream of thought, so absorbed in the mental commentary that the living world in front of you goes unnoticed. The rebellion is not wickedness. It is the ordinary trance of a mind that would rather narrate reality than actually perceive it.

Seeing and hearing in the true sense begin the moment you step out of that stream and give your full attention to what is here. The people described are not seeing because they are somewhere else, inside their heads. When you return your awareness to the present, the world becomes vivid again.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Whatever a person declines to take in is exactly what would have cost them the life they are currently defending.

Deletion is a strategy before it is a failure. Taking in what would force a change hurts now, so the aim drifts, the drift leaves the belief intact, and the intact belief sets a state comfortable enough to produce tomorrow the same choices it produced today. Rebellion of this kind is quiet: where focus goes, energy flows, so a warning that is never aimed at gets no energy and functions as if it were never spoken.

Working equipment proves nothing about where it is aimed, which is why God stops arguing the message and has it acted out in the street, where the eyes have nowhere else to land. The cost is years of warning that could have gone into preparing, given instead to defending a world that was already ending.

Live Ezekiel 12:2 today

  1. On your commute, put the phone away for one stretch and let your eyes rest on what is actually there: the light, the faces, the trees going past. No narrating, just looking.
  2. The next time someone talks to you, listen without preparing your reply. You will hear things in their voice you have been missing for years.
  3. In a meeting or on a call when you feel your mind drifting into its own story, come back to the sound of the voice in the room. One return is enough to be present again.

How much of today did I actually see?

Zen

A student asked for the whole teaching and was told: when you eat, eat; when you walk, walk. Everything else is being somewhere you are not.

Buddhism · Satipatthana Sutta

When walking, know that you are walking. Awareness returned to the body and the senses is the beginning of actually seeing.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Most of what disturbs us is not the thing itself but the running commentary we add to it. Strip the commentary and look at what is actually in front of you.
