Ezekiel 12:22 Meaning Son of Man

Son of man, what is this proverb that you have in the land of Israel, saying, ‘The days are prolonged, and every vision fails?’

What does Ezekiel 12:22 mean?

A saying everyone repeats is a belief nobody had to earn, and it decides what you stop preparing for. Repetition does the work that evidence should do.

A saying everyone repeats is a belief nobody had to earn, and it decides what you stop preparing for.

Repetition does the work that evidence should do. Put a line in enough mouths and it stops sounding like an opinion and starts sounding like common sense, the hardest belief to examine because no one person is responsible for it. Years of nothing happening became a rule about what never will, and the rule produces indifference, indifference produces inattention, and inattention decides no vision is worth acting on.

Delay was read as absence, the one inference the evidence will not carry. Nobody had to verify a proverb; it only had to be easy to say, and that is what kept it in circulation. What it costs is preparation: the word arrives on the day Yahweh set and finds people who made no arrangements for it.

Live Ezekiel 12:22 today

  1. Catch one line you repeat without thinking, nothing ever changes here, it is too late for that, people are the worst, and ask where you first heard it. Then ask what you stopped preparing for because of it.
  2. In the group chat, when the familiar pessimistic line goes around, ask one honest question instead of adding to it. Not a correction, just where did we get that.
  3. Do one small piece of preparing today for the thing you keep saying will never happen. The appointment, the savings transfer, the conversation, the backup.

What have I stopped getting ready for because nothing has happened yet?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Seneca

Nothing is so believed as what the crowd repeats, and nothing is examined less. A saying passed from mouth to mouth never had to prove itself once.

Buddhism · the Kalama Sutta

Do not accept a thing because it is tradition, because it is widely said, or because a teacher says it. Test it against what you can see for yourself.

Taoism · Tao Te Ching

The slow way things unfold is not the same as nothing happening. Quiet is often the shape of something still gathering.
