Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire has devoured both its ends, and the middle of it is burned. Is it profitable for any work?
The vine gives wood that can build nothing. It cannot be carved into a tool or a beam.

The same verse, read by one tradition.

PSYCHOANALYSIS
The vine gives wood that can build nothing. It cannot be carved into a tool or a beam. It is fit only to burn. Something in each of us is like this: an old attitude or an outgrown role, a part of the self that can be put to no further use.
Fire here means transformation, the slow inner change that turns energy from one form into another. What cannot be kept or rebuilt is fed to it. The wood is burned at both ends and through the middle because burning was the only thing it could ever do, and in burning it gave up all the energy it held as warmth and light.
Psychoanalysis lens
What are you still carrying that cannot be rebuilt into anything?
The Way is a matter of taking away, not piling on. Each day something is dropped until what is left can actually move.
He asks what is truly yours and what you have only been carrying, and tells you to set the rest down. What cannot serve you is not worth the weight of being kept.
The fire of knowledge is said to burn up what has accumulated, and the burning is treated as a gift. What goes into it was never going to become anything else.
