Ezekiel 18:20 Meaning The Soul Who Sins

The soul who sins, he shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be on him.

What does Ezekiel 18:20 mean?

No one can carry your account for you, which means every inherited excuse quietly stops working today. Three decisions run a life: what a person aims attention at, what they decide it means, and what they do next.

No one can carry your account for you, which means every inherited excuse quietly stops working today.

Three decisions run a life: what a person aims attention at, what they decide it means, and what they do next. Aim the first at a father's failures and the second writes itself, that the blood was bad and the ending was fixed before birth, and the third never gets made at all. God refusing to transfer one soul's debt to another strips that story of its material.

A man who stops paying down a debt never billed to him gets those three decisions back, and sees how long they were made by default. The cost of keeping the inheritance is every year spent proving a verdict no court entered against him.

Live Ezekiel 18:20 today

  1. Name one sentence you repeat about your family that explains why you cannot change something. Say it out loud once, then ask whether it is a fact or just a story you inherited.
  2. The next time a relative brings up the old pattern at dinner, hear them out without defending or joining in, and then go do the small thing the pattern says you never do.
  3. When something goes wrong at work today and you feel the pull to say this is just how you are, skip that line entirely and say what you will do differently in the next hour.

Whose debt have I been paying that was never billed to me?
