Ezekiel 2:6 · World English Bible

Ezekiel 2:6 Meaning You

You, son of man, don’t be afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns are with you, and you dwell among scorpions. Don’t be afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they are a rebellious house.

What does Ezekiel 2:6 mean?

Be not afraid of them, nor of their words. The hostility of others, their sharp speech and disapproving looks, has power over you only through the ego that takes it personally.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Be not afraid of them, nor of their words. The hostility of others, their sharp speech and disapproving looks, has power over you only through the ego that takes it personally. When someone's negativity meets no self in you that needs defending, it finds nothing to wound.

You may dwell among difficult people, surrounded by what feels like thorns and scorpions. Their unconsciousness is theirs, not yours, and you need not be pulled into reaction by it. Once you see that their cruelty is only the noise of minds in pain, their looks cannot dismay you. Remain present, and their words pass through you without leaving a mark.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

To speak the truth is to walk among scorpions, and the command repeats because the fear is that strong. Ezekiel is sent to people who will hate him for what he says. The thorns and the hostile faces are guaranteed. What he is told is not that they will listen, only that he must not let their looks silence him.

Most people are governed by the words and glances of others, and so they say what keeps them safe. Fear makes them obedient. A man who fears the rebellious crowd more than he values what is right becomes its instrument. Say the thing that needs saying, even when the room turns against you.

Live Ezekiel 2:6 today

  1. When a message or a comment stings today, feel the heat rise and do nothing for sixty seconds. Watch how much of the pain is the story you are already building about it.
  2. When someone snaps at you, remember that whatever is hurting in them had a long day before it reached you. You can be kind without agreeing and without absorbing it.
  3. In a tense meeting or a group chat going sideways, let the sharp words pass through instead of catching them. You are not required to defend a self that was never under real threat.

What would today feel like if I had nothing to protect?

Stoicism · Epictetus

It is not what people do to you that wounds you, but your own judgment about it. Take away the judgment and the insult has nowhere to land.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

They abused me, they struck me, they defeated me. Those who keep turning such thoughts over keep their anger alive. Those who set them down are free.

Tao Te Ching

Water takes no offense. It yields, flows around the hard thing, and stays itself, which is why nothing can break it.
