BUDDHISM
Taṇhā: Craving Thirst is the literal sense of the word. She went after her lovers thirsty, and now that same thirst is answered with a cup held to her mouth that she cannot push away. A drinker ordering one more never plans on the morning, yet the wanting and the filling are one motion.
Āsava: The fermenting taints Named for liquor left standing until it turns, these are the old seepings of sensual wanting, of becoming, of not seeing clearly. Her cup is full of that brew, and no stranger poured it in from outside; it fermented in the jar she had been keeping. So the drunkenness is the taste of what was already stored, coming back up.
Kammavipāka: The ripening of deeds Actions come due on their own schedule. Samaria drank first while Jerusalem watched and learned nothing, so the cup passes to the second sister who walked the first sister's road: same seed, same soil, same plant. Her sister's name is on the label only because they both bought from the one vine.
Soka: Sorrow Grief is the plain weight that settles after loss. It comes in the cup already mixed with the drunkenness, poured together rather than served in turn, since pleasure taken heedlessly and sorrow share a vessel. Anyone sick the morning after a long night knows the second half of the drink is the first half returning.
Saṁvega: The shock that turns a person A hard jolt of seeing can cut someone loose from the life they were living. Astonishment here is being struck dumb, standing in the wreck with nothing left to say, and those same dregs that flatten her are also where she might stop and look back down the road that brought her to this table. Desolation empties the house, and an empty house is quiet enough to hear in.
Buddhism lens
What am I still drinking while hoping the morning will be different?
The five flavors dull the tongue, the chase after pleasure leaves the heart racing and empty. What you pursue hardest is what ends up holding you.
Every craving carries its own bill, and the bill arrives in the same hand that held the cup. We call it bad luck when it comes due, though we poured it ourselves.
Pleasures that come through the senses begin sweet and end bitter, like nectar at the lip and poison in the stomach. The wise taste them knowing both halves.
