Ezekiel 28:9 Meaning Will You Yet Say Before Him

Will you yet say before him who kills you, ‘I am God’? But you are man, and not God, in the hand of him who wounds you.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

There is a moment when the ego swells to its ultimate claim and says, I am God. It imagines itself untouchable, the center of everything. This is identification carried to its extreme, the mind mistaking itself for the infinite.

Then death approaches, and the pretense cannot hold. Facing the one who ends you, you are shown to be what you always were beneath the boast, a form, a man, something that arises and passes away. The self that called itself God is revealed as mortal. Insisting otherwise changes nothing and only sharpens the fear, because you cannot shield from death an identity that was never more than a thought.

Live Ezekiel 28:9 today

  1. Walk past a mirror today and let the thought land that this face is temporary. Not as a grim thought, just an honest one, and see if anything in you is steady underneath it.
  2. Visit or call someone older than you and let them talk about what fell away over the years. Listen without rushing them to the hopeful part.
  3. When something threatens your standing at work and panic rises, name quietly what is actually at risk. Usually it is an image, not your life.

What in you would still be here if everything you point to as proof of yourself were gone?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Alexander the Great and his mule driver were both laid in the same ground. Keep death in view each day and the inflated self quietly deflates on its own.

Buddhism · the five remembrances

This body is of the nature to grow old, to sicken, to die. Nothing you build on top of it escapes that, so build somewhere else.

Tao Te Ching 33

To know others is clever, to know yourself is clear. The one who dies without being lost knows what in them was never the body making claims.
