CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

To be a watchman is to accept the burden of seeing danger before others do and saying so, even when the message is unwelcome. The role begins with listening. A person cannot warn honestly about what he has not first troubled himself to understand, so he stands at the wall and attends before he ever speaks. Sight comes with the duty to report it.

Silence, when you can see the threat, is its own betrayal. The one who perceives the coming trouble owes the truth to the people who cannot yet perceive it. Speaking that warning will cost you their goodwill. Say it anyway. The watchman who keeps quiet shares the ruin he failed to name.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Give a person a role and you change what they are able to hear, not merely what they must do.

Duty assigned to a person who has not accepted the identity behind it gets done badly and dropped early. Make someone a watchman and his ears change before his mouth does; the label sets what he attends to, attention sets what registers as urgent, urgency sets the emotion, and the emotion makes speaking unavoidable.

God hands over what the man now is rather than a list of messages to deliver, and the warnings follow because a silent watchman has stopped being one. Pressure applied directly to behavior never holds this long. A man who accepts the title will say hard things to people who do not want them, and the price of refusing is carrying the blood of what he could have prevented.

Live Ezekiel 3:17 today

  1. Before you warn anybody about anything, spend ten quiet minutes making sure you actually understand it. Listening comes before speaking, every time.
  2. Tell one person the thing you have been avoiding because they will not like hearing it. Say it privately, say it kindly, and say it as a friend would.
  3. When you see a plan heading somewhere bad at work, put it in words once, clearly, in the room where the decision is made. Even if it costs you the easy afternoon.

What do you already see coming that you have decided is not your place to mention?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

If a man is going wrong, tell him kindly and show him where. Keeping quiet about it is not politeness, it is a failure of friendship.

Judaism · the duty to rebuke

The teaching says do not stand by while your neighbor comes to harm, and do not hate him in your heart instead of speaking to him. The silence is the unkindness.

Confucianism · Analects

A true friend tells you what you do not want to hear and keeps telling you until you can hear it. Flattery is how friendship rots.
