Ezekiel 33:7 Meaning So You

So you, son of man: I have set you a watchman to the house of Israel. Therefore hear the word from my mouth, and give them warnings from me.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

Being appointed a watchman means the safety of others now rests partly on whether you are willing to speak. The position is not chosen for comfort. A person set at the wall must first hear clearly, then carry an unpopular truth to people who would rather not receive it. The listening disciplines the warning so it carries weight rather than mere alarm.

What you see obligates you. To perceive the danger and hold your tongue is to let it arrive unopposed, and the guilt of that silence is real. Tell them plainly. The words may make you enemies among the very people you are trying to save, and you speak them regardless, because that is the office you were given.

Live Ezekiel 33:7 today

  1. Before you tell anyone anything hard, sit with it for ten quiet minutes with your phone face down. Get clear on what is actually true, so what comes out is information and not just alarm.
  2. Have the conversation you have been putting off, in person or on a call rather than by text. Lead with the facts and not with how worried you are, and stay in the room for their reaction.
  3. When speaking up will cost you something, standing with a coworker, correcting a story going around the family chat, say it anyway and accept that some people will be annoyed with you for a while.

Who are you protecting by staying quiet, them or yourself?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

Your post is given to you, not picked by you, and you hold it until you are released. Walking away from it because it is uncomfortable is desertion.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

You are not required to finish the work, and you are not free to abandon it. The task does not wait for you to feel equal to it.

Sufism · Rumi

The truth is a bitter medicine, and the friend who hands it to you is not your enemy. Sweet lies are what you get from people who do not care how you end up.
