What does Ezekiel 36:23 mean?

God's honor will be shown, and the surprising place He chooses is a changed human heart. The sickness is the quiet damage a careless life does to what it represents, dragging a holy name through the mud of its own hypocrisy.

Sufism

God's honor will be shown, and the surprising place He chooses is a changed human heart. The sickness is the quiet damage a careless life does to what it represents, dragging a holy name through the mud of its own hypocrisy. The cure is to become clean inside, since watchers judge the Maker by the mirror.

What looks like two rescues is one. God clears His own name by clearing the people who carry it, and the world comes to know Him not through argument but through a life made whole before them.

Live Ezekiel 36:23 today

  1. Think of one place where what you say you believe and what you actually do have come apart. Close the gap on your side today, quietly, with nobody told.
  2. With one person who knows what you stand for, be the same in the small thing as in the big one: the tone you use when you are tired, the promise about picking someone up, the money you said you would send back.
  3. When someone is watching and you are under pressure, in traffic, in a meeting going badly, at the register with a line behind you, let them see you steady. That is the only sermon most people will ever hear from you.

If someone judged what I love by the way I behave when it costs me, what would they conclude?

The same truth in other traditions

Analects

Confucius said the ruler who corrects himself has no need to issue orders; people straighten by looking at him. Authority rests on a life, not on an argument.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He told himself to stop debating what a good man is and simply be one. A philosophy is judged by the person carrying it, and a bad carrier discredits a true teaching.

Tao Te Ching

The sage does not explain the way, he embodies it, and people are changed by being near him. What is lived spreads further than what is announced.
