Ezekiel 37:23 Meaning They Won’t Defile Themselves Any More

They won’t defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions; but I will save them out of all their dwelling places, in which they have sinned, and will cleanse them. So they will be my people, and I will be their God.

What does Ezekiel 37:23 mean?

An idol is anything the heart trusts to save it in place of God, and a person can carry those small gods into every room they live in. Letting them go and being washed is what restores it, since a mirror caked with what it worshipped cannot reflect the face it was made for.

The promise reaches into the very places where the ruin happened. God does not wait for a clean heart to arrive; He comes into the stained dwelling, cleanses it there, and by that closeness the two become one belonging, my people and their God.

Live Ezekiel 37:23 today

  1. Look at where your attention actually goes in the first ten minutes after you wake up. Whatever you reach for first is telling you something; let it tell you without arguing back.
  2. In the room where you are usually worst, the kitchen at the end of a long day, the car with your family in it, the desk at five o'clock, change one thing about how you act there rather than waiting to feel different.
  3. When something you depend on wobbles today, a number, a reply that does not come, someone's approval, feel the panic and name what it reveals. The size of the fear shows you the size of the trust you placed there.

What am I asking to save me that was never able to?

Dhammapada

What we cling to is what binds us, and the holding, not the thing held, is the chain. Letting go is the release.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He said we are disturbed not by things but by what we have decided they are worth to us. Whatever you cannot bear to lose is already running you.

Katha Upanishad

The sages taught that a person who chases the pleasant in place of the good gets what he chased and misses himself. The small goods are real and they cannot hold the weight put on them.
