ESOTERIC
The whole survey is a measuring of the human head as a sacred structure. The windows are the senses, the openings through which the outer world enters, and every part is cut to one measure because the body is built to a single divine proportion. The gate that looks east opens toward the right hemisphere, where the higher awareness dwells, so the entrance faces the side of the brain that receives the inner light.
The 2 rows of palm carved along the way are the twin currents of energy that wind up either side of the spine, drawing on the inner water as a palm draws from a hidden spring. One rises to that gate by 7 steps, the 7 nerve centers, each a stage the climbing energy must pass before it stands at the threshold of the awakened mind.
Windows: the senses, the openings in the head through which the outer world is let in Gate toward the east: the doorway into the right hemisphere, the side of the brain where the higher awareness lives Palm trees: the 2 energy channels that wind up either side of the spine, feeding on the inner water 7 steps: the 7 nerve centers along the spine, the stages the rising energy climbs

What have I been letting in through my eyes and ears today without ever deciding to?
The practice begins with drawing the senses back from their objects, since these openings are what let the outer world flood in. Turn them inward and the same gates become a way through.
Close the openings and shut the doors, and you spend your life without exhaustion. Leave them wide and you spend yourself on everything that passes.
The teaching speaks of six gates through which experience arrives, and of standing watch at each. Not walling them up, simply knowing what you are letting in.
